From the Bluff — Southern California Coast

$650.00Price

This is the view that makes Southern Californians quietly, privately convinced they live somewhere the rest of the world only dreams about.

Fleming paints it from the bluff — the only honest place to paint it from. Standing above, looking down and out across a coastline that curves away into haze and horizon, where the Pacific reveals itself in impossible layers of turquoise, aquamarine, and deep cerulean, each shade more generous than the last. This is not the ocean as postcard. This is the ocean as fact — vast, indifferent, breathtaking, home.

The foreground is all California chaparral in its full, unruly glory. Lime green and olive scrub tumbles down the hillside with the cheerful abandon of something that has never once been landscaped — wild fennel, coastal sage, sun-bleached grasses, and two dark, painterly coastal oaks that dissolve at their edges into Fleming's signature scattered particle technique, as if the breeze is gently unmaking them leaf by leaf.

The bluff itself sweeps diagonally across the composition — warm sandy ochre fading into the turquoise shallows below, where small white waves exhale quietly against a crescent of beach. Beyond that, the headland continues its gentle curve northward, softening into atmospheric haze, suggesting miles and miles of more of the same extraordinary ordinary.

The sky is a clean, confident California blue — the kind that arrives in October and stays through April, punctuated by just enough cloud to remind you the weather here is not performing. It simply is.

This is a painting for anyone who has stood on a bluff at Laguna, Dana Point, Palos Verdes, or Malibu and understood, fully and finally, why people come here and never leave.

Palette: Pacific turquoise · Cerulean blue · Lime green · Olive · Sandy ochre · Cloud white · Deep aquamarine Mood: Effortless California grandeur · Wild coastal freedom · The privilege of the everyday view

"Somewhere above the Pacific, the chaparral is still growing toward the light. It always will be." — VivRo

Collector's Note: From the Bluff is Fleming's love letter to her Southern California home — painted with the intimacy of someone who has walked these trails, breathed this air, and chosen, daily, to notice how extraordinary it all is. Displayed large, it brings the Pacific indoors in the most generous possible way. An anchor piece for any coastal interior.
