The Perfect Shot — Lake Como, Italy
Some moments are so perfectly composed that life itself seems to be showing off.
Fleming captures one such moment with the instincts of a painter who knows that the best compositions are the ones that arrive already framed — and this one arrives impossibly, gloriously complete. A vintage orange Fiat, top down, cream canopy catching the last of the afternoon light, sits at the center of a grand villa driveway as though it has been placed there by someone with an exceptional eye and absolutely no desire to hurry anywhere.
And beyond it — Lake Como opens up between two towering dark cedars like a painting within a painting, silver-grey and immense, the mountains above it swathed in dramatic storm clouds that churn and billow in deep slate and charcoal, lit from within by a light that has no business being that beautiful. The lake itself is a mirror — still, pewter, infinite — framed by the trees the way only centuries-old gardens know how to frame things.
The driveway that leads the eye from the orange car down toward the water is flanked by formal hedgerows, flowering borders, and bursts of acid yellow-green foliage that glow against all that dark drama like small celebrations. Manicured symmetry meets wild atmospheric sky — the eternal tension of the Italian villa garden, where civilization and nature have been negotiating their boundaries for five hundred years and neither has won.
The little orange car is everything. Perfectly scaled against the grandeur surrounding it, it carries the painting's entire emotional weight — jaunty, warm, gloriously human against all that ancient magnificence. There is almost certainly someone wonderful behind that wheel. They are almost certainly late for something and entirely unconcerned about it.
This is a painting about the moment you arrive somewhere extraordinary and realize, with your whole body, that you are exactly where you are supposed to be.

"Lake Como doesn't care how long you've been driving. It only asks that you stop and look." — VivRo
