The limestone battlements crowning the clifftop, the particular shade of that Mediterranean blue, the lush subtropical canopy pressing against ancient stone walls — this is the Côte d'Azur in its most quietly magnificent form. Perhaps Èze. Perhaps Cap Ferrat. Perhaps somewhere that only exists this perfectly in memory and paint.

Fleming frames the scene from the water — the most honest vantage point, the one that lets the land reveal itself completely.
